qlewkr's down in VA/MD for a family get-together. Last night on the phone she told me that her more conservative siblings agree that they're sad Romney dropped out, he was their first choice, but now they'll support Obama.
Well, McCain is the anti-christ for a lot of people and they also don't want Hillary to win...so Obama is the least horrific person they can come up with to vote for.
I spoke with my mother, who's registered Republican in NJ, and who says that no way in hell is she voting for anyone but a Dem in the general election. She said that in the NJ primary, she voted for Ron Paul.
I said, "Ron Paul? But mother, he's a nutbar."
She said yes, he is, but NJ says you have to vote what you're registered as for the primary, and she didn't want to not vote, but she did not want to give a vote to any Republican with ANY chance of winning. Ergo: Ron Paul. Apparently, she also ran into some guy in a checkout line, and my mom, not being shy, asked him if he'd voted. He said no, he really disliked all the Republicans that much. She told *him* to vote for Ron Paul, and when he just stared at her, she explained the above reasoning. He said, my god, you're right, I'm going out right now and voting.
This is the *weirdest* election season, like, ever.
I think Ron Paul's got some things wrong, but that he's no nutbar. I voted for him in 1998, since he was the Libertarian candidate: I've never been a Libertarian, but share many views with that party, including most on foreign policy.
The best pro-McCain sentiment I've heard lately is from, no shit, Ann Coulter, who said she'd rather vote for Hillary than McCain.
Her rationale is that whoever is President next will fuck things up so badly the other party is a shoo-in in 2012 and will lead a 30-year dynasty.
But still: ANN COULTER SUPPORTS HILLARY CLINTON OVER JOHN McCAIN. If that's not a ringing endorsement for McCain as a not entirely irrational, level-headed, even-handed Presidential prospect, I don't know what is.

LOL! Ann Coulter often seems to have only a nodding acquaintence with the real world. Her rationale conveniently ignores that the scenario described is preciselywhat'shappeningrightnow.
I might also point out that purposely electing the person you think will damage the country still further is a grotesquely diseased notion in itself.. but of course, such notions are her specialty.
Fiscal conservatives were supporting Gov. Romney. Now that he's gone they typically won't vote for Sen. McCain because he's not the type to hand out bags of money and won't vote for Sen. Huckabee because the creepy religious nuts should just vote and not be heard. and won't vote for Dr. Paul because he's a loony that wants to upend fiscal policy, among other things.
So, that means they have to vote for his opponent and hold their noses for four years. So, between Sens. Clinton and Obama, they'll pick the latter because that type typically has an irrational hatred of all things Clinton.
My operations manager said roughly the same thing the other day, although I haven't seen him in a couple days, so I'm not sure what his take on this will be.
You aren't the only person I've heard this from! A friend told me that last week her boyfriend couldn't make up his mind between Romney and Obaba either!
Even with the other noted reasoning (or arguably non-reasoning in some cases) in play, I think some of this is attributable to an unusual draw Obama has. Some of the unexpected Obama-voters (if they end up doing that) will get about what they expect; others might actually get disappointed if he doesn't turn out to be the king of their Camelot. That's my take, anyway.

Perfectly understandable.
