(no subject)

At some point during the late night dogwalk yesterday, D and I were discussing how many local dog owners we DIDN'T know the names of. As in, we know the names of their dogs (Lily, Felicia, Spike, Zoey, Lily the Pug, Demon) but have no idea what the owners' names are.

D: I'm tired of this. Our next dog is getting named 'BrianAndDeb'.

Me: Oh, I like it. And his last name can be "sDog".

You wouldn't think we'd be able to pronounce the capital letters like that, but we totally were. It's a trick we've developed.

Dog's are amazing icebreakers, but you're right, getting the name of the dog's person(s) isn't facilitated by the named entity on the leash.

When I was a kid, my mom got a stray cat from some friends of the family who had found the stray but could not keep her. We named her Tess, which stood for the names of the family who gave her to us: Tom, Eric and Sandra.

We left the extra S on for savings.

I thought it was a unique naming convention until recently, when I spoke to my dad and learned he'd picked up a cat in his travels which he had named Reb. This stands for Rich, Ellen and Barbara, the three family members nearest to him. He wasn't around when my mom got Tess, and it was over 25 years ago so I don't think he consciously remembers the little cat and the story behind her name.

Both sides of my nuclear fallout family have adopted pets and given them acronym names based on people they know.

I don't quite understand it, myself, but there you go.

Wow, lots of people like naming their dogs after me, apparently. And that's a good point, even when it comes to people I run into walking their dogs on my street.
