When joining a LARP and creating a character, designing him as a timid little information-gatherer with no combat skills is not necessarily a bad thing. It isn't even necessarily bad to sink a lot of energy and resources into a piece of property he owns and social contacts in his hometown.
But before you do so, it might maybe possibly be a good idea to consult a magic 8-ball and ask it, oh, "Is a huge army going to drop out of the sky and omgwtfPWN!!1! my hometown and the rest of New England between my first game and my second?"
Just as a random example.
