This is from a Mass. Green Party mailing:

"Also, more people are stepping forward to throw sand in the gears of the
Bush administration's war machine. Former MGP co-chair Jonathan Leavitt
and longtime Green activist Sean Donahue started a seven-day fast today
in Lawrence to protest the failure of Congressman Marty Meehan to oppose
the war. "

Throwing sand in the gears of the war machine.

Uh.
Huh.

Let's just review these facts: it's not a hunger strike like Gandhi's or the Northern Ireland ones, where lives were in danger. It's seven days. Seven days in which they'll be lying in comfy beds with ginger ale and a Playstation. (Okay, no, I'm being uncharitable. I'm sure they'll be writing urgent letters and re-reading Martin Luther King's "Letter from a Selma Bedroom during my Slightly Uncomfortable Three-Day Fast". Oh, wait, it's "Letter from a Selma JAIL"?!? Because he actually took action and got ARRESTED? Think of that! Oh there I go, being uncharitable again.)

Yeah. I find myself despairing of a forceful, charismatic personality arising among the left-wing to actually convince people to *do* stuff. Frankly, I can't throw stones; I'm the ultimate couch potato activist (a la Morgan Calabrese's friend and his organization). Until someone *does* stand up, we'll be overwhelmed by the forceful, charismatic, well-heeled right-wingers and their steady march to world domination...

Um.

Since when does one put a TIME LIMIT on a HUNGER STRIKE?

I mean, jeez, people, even anorexics know better than that. Their motives are seriously whacked, but their methods are a hell of a lot more effective than... this.
