Thought of the day, or 'why Oaken shouldn't be allowed to win the lottery'

I think a really interesting art project would involve getting a lot of cell phones with really good reception, and putting them in situations that would be deadly or very painful if you were really there, and recording the sounds.

So far I've come up with:

*falling into lava
*getting swallowed by a big fish
*falling off a high cliff
*getting trampled in a mosh pit
*thrown at a wasp nest
*crushed by an elephant
*buried by an avalanche (especially if it's the ring tone that sets the avalanche off...there's poetic justice there).

Being all aural, it's not really very marketable to most museums...maybe if a little diorama was constructed for each recording, so that you saw what the circumstances were when the sound got recorded?

or you could do abstract light installations that could express the cirucmstances emotionally....

it wouldn't be any worse than the istallation art of the completely dark room i saw once.....i fell down the steps and hurt myself...:(

cell phones don't like cd players. at least, my cell phone and cd player are adversarial -- if i'm listening to the latter when the former rings, all matter of holy hell breaks out. this might also be an interesting thing to record.

How about...... finding a stinky cat poo IN THE BED, UNDERNEATH THE BLANKETS!! I can assure you the sounds resulting from that situation would climax the show!

How about just getting a second cell phone, placing it on a bus/subway then dialing yourself and listen to what people have to say?

Actually, something like this happened at work Thursday night. Someone called Domino's from a cell phone(accidently?) while jogging and we listened to her talk for about 20 minutes before the phone went dead.

So in this book I'm reading ("Sick Puppy" by Carl Hiasson, pretty good so far) there's a vet who collects things he retrieves from inside dogs.

One dog eats a cell-phone. The owner figures out where her phone is when she hears it ringing. !!!!

(imagine the poor dog if she'd had it set on vibrate, lol!)
