Last night was a big breakthrough on City of Heroes for me: I joined up with a team for the first time. Or rather, in true superhero tradition, a crisis brought several loners together, and a team was forged (and many help files were frantically checked).

Here's the situation: Perez Park is an area where groups of 10 or so enemies hang out within sight of each other, just milling around until a hero gets too close and action starts. You can frequently see lowish level characters hanging around the gate out of range of these large mobs, healing or chatting or working out a route to get around the gangs to where they need to go.

Last night you could also see one smart-aleck player with superspeed going up to a group, upsetting them, and then running off with them all in pursuit. And then running off to ANOTHER group and doing the same thing. And then a third. And then a fourth. And then leading ALL of them, like a homecoming parade of death, right at the appalled newbies. Mayhem ensued.

So we Teamed. And several minutes later, I figured out how to actually TALK to the people on my team, which made things go smoother. And oh, it was fun. By the end, I was so into it that I even used my Taunt power for the first time, breaking past both my natural instincts and years of pixel-killing experience.

('Taunt' is the special ability to piss off every enemy in sight so that they focus their attacks on you, and only you. In any other game system, this wouldn't be a power, it'd be a major flaw. When I trigger it my character makes a rude noise, but that doesn't seem like enough to enrage a crowd--I keep feeling I should sprout a text box saying 'Buy low-cost cialis! kthxbye!')
