This Weekend's New Experiences:

1) I went letterboxing! [livejournal.com profile] snowwand showed us how it was done, and it's a lot of fun! We wandered around the suburbs following our treasure maps (at one point we passed [livejournal.com profile] meesto and [livejournal.com profile] trickofthedarks' old house, which gave me a wave of nostalgia), and the birds were out and we were the only people in the woods and the snow was sticky and good for snowballs. It rocked.

2) I went to my first Chocolate Bar! The Newton Rotary club had a 'Death by Chocolate' all-you-can-eat fundraiser in a hotel ballroom. Calling it a ballroom makes it sound more high-class than it actually was, though--it was 11 or 12 tables against the walls where people were doling out cake slices and other chocolatey things, tables down the middle of the room where people could sign up for the silent auction, and about a zillion people filling up the rest of the space.

There was a notable lack of truffles; cakes were the most popular item, with cookies a close second, and I was very impressed with some of the frostings and ganaches. We filled up quickly, though...D and I left within a half hour, and she was already in such a sugar daze that she was having trouble driving.

3) [livejournal.com profile] baaaaabyanimals, which has been amazing all weekend, showed me this:

The penguins are oil spill victims; the sweaters are meant to keep them from preening their feathers and ingesting oil. But OMFG.

D and [livejournal.com profile] discojesus watched a movie last night about the newly-dead being processed in a bureaucratic system, held in limbo until they chose one memory; they'd take just that memory with them into the afterlife and forget everything else. I can't tell you how repugnant I find this concept. There are at least a half-dozen memories I cling to with the tenacity of a bulldog on black market steroids, and the sight of penguins in sweaters (and the knowledge that we live in a world wacky enough and kind enough for folks to knit them) has been added to the list.
