oakenguyEncounters With Wildlife
1) We found a tick on Toby last night, about a half-inch north of his winkie. Mayhem ensued. Part of me wants to blot those twenty minutes completely from my memory, and another part thinks that there's a so-bad-it's-good short story to be made out of an opening line like "There I sat, tweezers in one hand, bottle of oil in the other, moving gingerly and thinking to myself 'Whatever you do, DON'T tap the penis'."
2) Red-tailed hawk settling down onto the branch of a yellow-leafed maple tree ten feet away? Awesome.
Hawk swooping down on a wee mouse? Troubling.
The mouse's squeals and squeaks audible for a block as we walk away from The Great Circle of Life? Very VERY disconcerting.
3) I voted! It's mostly a symbolic gesture here in Mass, and I'm pretty sure everyone in line also knew it, but the line was still about 20 people long and winding and curling across the elementary school lobby at 7:45. One voter brought his 1-year-old along, who stood in the middle of the curve and did a wobbly little dance. Good times.
EDIT: the spellcheck's suggestions for the proper spelling of "winkie" are a hoot. wonkier, winker, wink ie, wink-ie, wink, Twinkie, Winkle, Winnie, winkle, pinkie, wonk, winier, winked, inkier, Wini, wine, wonky

Date: 2004-11-02 10:17 am (UTC)As to wildlife, there were four redtails saring over West Somerville/Arlington, on Saturday. It was cool and we got to meet our neighbors as we all stood on Broadway, with binoculars. The funny thing is, I was the only one to know that there were hawks in the area. Look up people!
