Halfway through finals. I've already seen my first fake cast, but at least so far this year the student has remembered to keep wearing it on the same arm.

My sciatica is feeling better, which I'm claiming is the result of my super-duper recuperative abilities and not, say, the weather being less rainy. I'm following all y'alls advice for better ways to medicate myself, so I'm now eating and drinking caffeine before I take the pills, taking the pills with more caffeine, and walking around afterwards. At 4 in the morning, this has led to interesting results. Including D sleeping in the other room.

No, she's actually doing that because of a nasty chest cold, poor thing. Sick, blistered, *and* dealing with my whiny ass.

On the other hand, she's the one sitting on the couch in her bathrobe watching episodes of 'Coupling' right now.

Hrmph.

This post is feeling very scattered.

My hometown paper came in the mail yesterday. These were the main stories:

*The BIG story of the week: over the previous weekend, there'd been a poacher sting operation involving, I swear to god, ROBOT DEER. Several people were caught when they pulled over their trucks (it's always trucks), rolled down the window and took potshots at them. Sadly, none of them tried to defend themselves by claiming that they knew the deer were robots and they were just fighting an apparent android invasion.

* Two pigs (about 100 pounds apiece) were apparently abandoned in Minot, and wandered the streets poking around until one of the town selectmen rounded them up. ("They were having a great time until someone squealed on them", is a quote.) They were the main topic at the town meeting scheduled for that weekend--apparently animal shelters won't take them, and since they're livestock there're all sorts of regulations about how they need to be housed.

* A local Lutheran church is having a Blue Christmas service for people who, for one reason or another, are completely out of the Christmas spirit and/or just generally upset with God. I can't decide whether this is a disturbing idea or a brilliant one. It partly depends on whether parishioners get to throw eggs at the Old Navy Carollers.

Coming next summer, the long awaited sequal(el?): "I, Robot Deer", starring Will Smith as the intrepid if not off-beat animal control officer...

Maybe the Old Navy carolers are androids. If so, something stronger than eggs is needed to ward them off. Is there such a thing as a fleece bomb?

Remind me to tell you of the hysterical (and rather disturbing) anti-deer letter to the editor I read a few years back. To long to go into here.

My church has a Blue Christmas service. Its actually a great idea, many people have suffered lossess around the holiday, and the season tends to depress them. every one runs about siniging and cheery, and gripes at them to get in the spirit, while they are just reminded of a lost loved one. So a service that focusses on the TRUE meaning, and aknowledges the loss, is actually great for people, i know it grows in attendence for our church each year as people find out about it.

Although I loathe the commercialization of Christmas in general, I kind of like the Old Navy carolers myself.

It is really tough -- my Nana died on Xmas Eve a few years ago, and so now there's this conflict in me...Christmas Spirit vs mourning for Nana. But, I know Nana would rather see me enjoy the holiday -- she was so full of life, she wouldn't want me to be depressed every year. So I let the Christmas Spirit win, and just remember her, instead of mourning her.
I think it's much tougher on my mother, since Nana was her mom...
