Oct. 30th, 2005 02:17 amOh my.
At 2AM, skunks wander my neighborhood with impunity. And when one hears a little shuffling noise down by ones feet, it's not safe to assume it's the neighbor's cat.
REALLY not safe.
I am a lucky, lucky person.
I've learned all this in the last ten minutes.
Woo. Adrenaline.

Date: 2005-10-30 10:52 am (UTC)We have occasionally had one around and about, and I always worry that the pack is going to find it in the backyard. I'm not sure who'd win in that case, but I know it wouldn't be me.

Both of these pictures I could have reached out and petted this little guy. He/she used to raid my garbage regularly, at my last place. Actually there was a whole family that lived back there. One night my friend and I came home and we had forgotten to put the outside light on but the moonlight was enough to see that something had gotten into the trash as it was on it's side and garbage littered my little yard. So in we went, turned on the outside light and proceeded to pick up the mess, stuffing it back into the trash can. A little while later when my friend was outside smoking and she said that the trash can was moving...it was moving but the top was now back on with the bungee cords keeping it snug in place. We each took turns running over to the can and unhooking a cord hoping a raccoon wouldn't emerge all pissed off. After I flipped the lid off, and there was nothing there to greet me, we stood in the door and watched. After about 5 minutes of rustling a tiny little head stuck out, crawled over the edge and scurried off into the woods. We had repacked the garbage with a baby skunk inside! Poor thing!

Date: 2005-10-30 01:52 pm (UTC)The funny thing is, it probably wouldn't have minded! From what I've seen - and I've encountered a bunch so far in my life - skunks are about the most laid-back animals on the planet...

The skunks on the boston harbo islands have no preditors and are so bold.

He had to have been a pet at some point (some folks de-scent them), because he had no idea he was supposed to be afraid of humans or that he was nocturnal :)
