Feb. 27th, 2006 11:11 amLa, fun weekend! On Saturday
heavenscalyx, one of my ol...er...one of my friends who I've known for the longest time celebrated her birthday by DMing a good old-fashioned D&D first edition dungeon crawl! It was amazingly fun; the combination of adventuring on high cliffs and players on massive sugar highs created some fascinating problem solving.
Oh, and the food! I need to get the recipes for the ginger cookies and that amazing dip, and the cake! The birthday cake had a bottom layer that was basically brownie dough, with a truffle ganache, and then a top layer that was a burnt sugar cake. The whole thing was then frosted with a vanilla glaze, and then a hex map had been marked off with dark chocolate, and the top was decorated with little miniatures and fire elementals made out of burnt sugar! It was both the best dessert and the geekiest single piece of art I have ever seen.
For the record, I played Astoundo the Gnome Illusionist, who was basically an unholy cross between the Mayor of Munchkinland and Gob from 'Arrested Development'.

Date: 2006-02-27 05:29 pm (UTC)Eli Whitney's Grandmother's Ginger Cookies (Are they done yet?!):
Cream one cup butter with one cup sugar. Add one cup molasses and one egg.
In a seperate bowl (if possible) combine dry ingredients: four cups of flour, one teaspoon salt, one teaspoon baking soda, one teaspoon cinnamon, and a heaping teaspoon of ginger. (What I made that day was mildly heaped; if you like your ginger cookies gingerier, I suggest a bit more.)
Add a drop of vinegar to a quarter cup of milk so as to sour it.
Add the milk and the flour pile to the butter&eggs pile and stir endlessly. This was where I was very glad for the Kitchenaid.
Drop cookies however you are prone to dropping cookies (my mother uses a one-inch-diameter ice cream scoop and then pats them down, which works quite well), and they bake at 350 degrees for 12-15 minutes. I made over five dozen with this recipe. And given that this was my first time making cookies alone ever, it must be a pretty reliable one, since I didn't mess it up. ;)
