An update from the chocolate store owner:

I'm still plugging along, but we should plan to do something for Valentine's day.  This year it falls on a Wednesday, so I was wondering if you wanted to hold an event (like a tasting and special valentine's boxed items) on Saturday the 10th or Sunday the 11th?

Also, I've ordered a multimedia projector for the space. I'm still waiting for it to be delivered, but it should be up and running by the 10th. I'm wondering if I can get my hands on a chocolate themed movie to show so we can make it more of a themed event.

Do you want to get together at the beginning of next week and discuss some plans so I can maybe get something into the Calendar and Sidekick section of the Globe?

Eep!

This is a sad thing to admit, but I've never BEEN to a tasting; at least, not if you don't count lingering at the back corner of Trader Joe's during one of their free cheesecake sample nights. What am I getting myself into by agreeing to this--is it something that's set up buffet-style, or more dim sum style with someone (me probably) bringing new samples around, or or or...(how obvious is it that I'm writing this four minutes before lunch?)

Gah. And eep. And time to bake.

I was supposed to play piano for a wine tasting here last year, and then after a while they told me that someone else had told another guy he could do it. So instead, I was to play for a chocolate tasting this year. Given their track record so far, I was hardly surprised to find out that the whole event had fallen through.

And the guy who played for the wine tasting sucked. Everything sounded like it came out of the same barrel. Near the bottom.

I've never been to a chocolate tasting either, but this sounds really cool and I hope it works out for you.

Like Water for Chocolate (Span), Chocolat (the misspelled american movie) Chocolate and strawberries (Span)
I know there are wine/chocolate tastings. You should have some way of limiting sample-taking. I think the more initiative you take, the better/more control you'll have. Spanish guitar music would be sexy. Man now *I'm* all excited about it. :)
Rach has said that she would love to help you any time you need it...I think that's a good offer right now.

My two cents and worth every penny

Woo-hoo!

Chocolat (the misspelled american movie)

It's not misspelled, it's the French spelling of the word. :)

I was also going to suggest it; I can't watch it without craving chocolate!

I consider it pretentious to give it a french name when it's an American movie. :)

Not going to debate it, different opinions are what make the world Not Vanilla.

I say your chocolate tasting is what YOU decide to commit to, what YOU decide shows off your stuff without becoming a overly-complicated nightmare, what would be fun for YOU to create and share. You know?

Snacktastic choc-ies. Lots of 'em. Bite sized. People hovering, wondering how many pieces they can sneak before they look like total pigs. Maybe one special show piece - like a giant something or a chocolate octopus or an american flag dipped in chocolate. Not really that, but something themed that shows off your creativity and creates a buzz.

Only commit to what would be fun for you. Don't concern yourself with what it "should" be. It's like your art show. Starring you. And your glossy chocolates.

That's my two pennies.

Oh - I'll bet people will want to place orders on the 10th or 11th by delivery on Valentines. Right? Consider what you can and can't do in those couple days between the big show and V-day.

Good luck!

There better be pictures.

Seconded. Don't worry about what it "should" be like -- come up with some cool ideas to pitch and do it how you want to. It'll be a lot cooler that way than if you try to imitate some idea of what it "ought to be."

Most of all, have fun with it!

I've been to a few tastings. What they all had in common were different displays like super fancy cakes and then small samples people could pop in their mouth. Chocolate fountains are always a hit, carvings, wine pairings, etc.
I also liked how each table had sheets written up giving a little background on each dessert. I know some people that have nut allergies so it was good to see what some of the ingredients were as well.
Good luck :)

Oh, the movie so needs to be Better Than Chocolate. Of course, not exactly family-friendly and much more queer friendly, but still...

When I think eating chocolate, I think Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Now there are two versions to choose from! But, imagine being able to serve chocolate while people are looking longing at the chocolate river. Mmmmm.

Was there any actual chocolate in that movie? I can't remember any.

Anyhow, isn't it sort of like an orange grove showing Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit?

Hurrah for you!
And will there be monkey's paws at it, hmmm?

I'm thinking play to your strengths and also what will please you best. Would you love to personally describe these treats to your delighted recipients, or wish to attend to other aspects and let little cards or a menu speak for you? Rather sit, relaxed, or see everyone's reactions up close?
Maybe try the lower stress approaches, and lovely displays?

Also, you, me, coffee, kid! WheNz?

I heartily second this- the richest, most chocolate-topic choice you could pick, and light humor throughout.
