Notes from my Lunch Excursion:

*Cordoning off City Hall Plaza, inviting a bajillion barbecue stands from all around the country and having an urban picnic? Good idea.
*Buying two tons of sand, and spreading it around the middle of City Hall Plaza to make a "day at the beach"? Good idea IN THEORY, but:
*Two tons of sand at a food event on a day with 20mph winds? Not. So. Good.

Yeah. So if anyone asks what North Carolina BBQ tastes like I'll reply, "Gritty. Oddly gritty."

I also got to watch the Save Landsdowne Street protest rally*, which was the lamest protest I've ever seen (and remember, folks, I was part of the great Oberlin, Ohio March Against Ridiculous-Looking Park Bandstands. I _know_ lame protests.) Eight people, none of them looking over 17, with signs saying things like "Axis is My Home" and "Axis + Avalon 4ever" and "If You Look Up 'Futile' in the Dictionary You'll See Us". (I was holding that one.)

Oddest of all, down in the Market there was a large man in leathers and a bandanna who looked a bit like a biker. When little kids got within earshot he'd go "Arrr! Who wants a sword?", and he'd whip out a balloon and make a balloon-sword for them.

But wait, that's not the odd part. The odd part is that fifteen feet away was a woman with two parrots on her shoulders. Not doing anything, just hanging out, just apparently a casually-dressed woman who wanted to get some sun while wearing parrots.

At no point did parrot-woman and balloon-pirate-biker look at each other. A love connection waiting to happen? Exes drawn to where they were happiest? I'll never know.



_{*Landsdowne street is a strip of nightclubs near the ballpark. One company owns the two biggest ones, Avalon and Axis; they want to shut them down, combine them and make one BIG nightclub. The city and most of the population have no problem with this, partially due to honest curiosity about what a nightclub without a sticky, tarry floor might be like.}

Aw, drat! I'd love to know if she was just out to get some sun and *happened* to be at Ground Zero for Boston Tourism, or if she liked all the attention from tourists, or if she didn't but the parrots *did*...many possibilities.
