My iTunes, on Random Shuffle, has just gone from 'You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch' to Eric Cartman singing 'O Holy Night'.

I think I have maybe 8 holiday songs in my collection (out of 4265). I get two in a row? Randomly? Today? Huh.

I can't mention the Grinch without noting that it's the original version sung by Thurle Ravenscroft. And I only mention that because Thurle Ravenscroft is such an incredibly cool name that I plan to mention it whenever possible. (This will supplement my ongoing plan to popularize 'fungwah' as an adjective.)

As if having a name like Thurle Ravenscroft isn't cool enough, he was Tony the Tiger, too.

I was going to mention that he was responsible for my eating all those Frosted Flakes and they were GRREEAAATT.

Oh, yeah. Thurl did a lot of stuff for Disney. He sang bass for the Grim Grinning Ghosts song in the Haunted Mansion (and when you pass by the quartet of singing busts, he's the one who people often mistake for Walt.) I think between Thurl and Paul Frees, they pretty much voiced every single character in every single attraction added to Disneyland in the 1960s, and that includes each and every singing doll in it's a small world.

Maybe Paul Winchell and Alan Young are in there, too. But still!

And don't forget Stewpot!

(I always wanted to play Stewpot in a production of South Pacific. I don't have a bass voice in the slightest, but hell, I just wanted to have a t-shirt that had STEWPOT haphazardly painted on it. The fact that one can haphazardly paint STEWPOT on a t-shirt without actually playing the role doesn't enter into it. See this one? This one's MY dream. And I'm takin it back.)

Just out of curiosity, were those two songs off the same album when you put them in itunes? For some reason the shuffle function is not entirely random, and tends to bias toward playing several songs from the same album close together. I see this all the time with my ipod R'lyeh.

And yeah, I can't think of too many names more cool than Thurl Ravenscroft. :)

Thurl's great. He turns up on "Seven Dreams," in the same cut as Dickie Beals (though there's no interaction between them). WFMU's "Beware of the Blog" had links to a whole bung load of songs he took part in, plus one ringer, which is identified as such. I also heard his voice in one of my Mickey Mouse Club songs, and he's guested on Lawrence Welk.
