Some taps do make more noise than others, and as a beginner it is actually helpful to be able to hear the noise you're making, to tell if you're doing it right. But I can't imagine that for a beginner class your teacher would say that you absolutely can't use a certain pair.
If you want to check out alternatives, I recommend Boston Dancewear on Mass Ave near the Hynes Convention Center. They seem to run a little cheaper.
