Yesterday evening during the dogwalk (Toby, btw, is walking totally normally and acting absolutely fine) we discovered that we now have CHICKENS living one street down from us! Three of them! Friendly, amber-colored with white underfeathers, clucking CHICKENS! We watched as the owner (who looks like a 22-year old Jet Li in glasses, btw) fed the friendliest one little bits of celery.

It was AWESOME.

For the next hour or so as we cleaned the kitchen I'd just randomly blurt "Chickens!" as I remembered seeing them.

Then a neighbor and her boyfriend came over and we all hung out, cooked some veggie burgers, chatted about our families and watched 'Dr. Horrible'.

I keep liking this neighborhood more and more.

be glad they're not roosters. chickens are lovely, but roosters will drive you MAD when they refuse to stop crowing.

A friend of mine back in Miami (where Latin people keep chickens ALL THE TIME) actually shot a rooster with a bow and arrow once. He denied it to the neighbor/owner, who KNEW my friend was a rennie, and therefore owned this kind of weaponry.

True story.

What neighborhood do you live in?

I used to know someone who kept chickens as an undergrad at MIt in their house - and actually was keeping them at their home in NJ when I met them...great for fresh eggs, etc. I probably actually have some books on chicken husbandry somewhere thanks to them - let me know if your interested and I'll see if they're here-ish or in NJ, and you can have them.

V. happy about Toby and chickens. May both live long and prosper, but may only the latter produce many eggs.

My neighbor across the street used to keep chickens too. Now he's switched to bees though.

Yay! Chickens!

We had wild turkeys in the yard recently. Now I randomly blurt out "turkeys!".

We should really get together.

Aww! What street so that I may walk by and look at them?

Also, do you think it's legal to have chickens in Cambridge? Usually there are laws about that sort of thing. Although apparently it's perfectly fine to have 1000s of waterfowl gathered at the base of the BU Bridge and sometimes obstruct traffic in that rotary.

Chickens! That's awesome! I'd SO have asked if they were willing to barter for eggs.

i used to walk one of my dogs by a house in your neighborhood that had chickens. when he realized that there were some tasty birds behind one of the fences, he'd try and scale the fence. i had to devise a new route for him after that...

Yay Toby & Chickens! I think Arlington just legalized them... I've still got over a dozen of eggs from my mom's birds - much nicer than the usual eggs, even if I have to rinse some chicken crust off some of them.

It's Henry, two houses up from Pearl. (I had to take a moment and mentally translate that out of Dog Owner Geography--whenever we're giving directions to the locals who we talk to, it's "the house two past Scrappy and Sam, where Felicia was until her owner got divorced".)
