It's a little like Livejournal without the journal, if that makes any sense? You fill out a profile, similar but much more in-depth than the LJ one, and link to your friends' profiles.
What makes it interesting is that Friendster gives you a Personal Network--you can see anyone's profile who has five or fewer degrees of separation from you, do searches, that sort of thing. So if my friend Justin has a friend with my exact taste in movies, I don't have to rely on Justin to realize it and introduce us.
Unsurprisingly, a lot of people use it as a dating service. But it's fun just as a way to learn about people, too.
