I got to meet Deb's new niece! Who's adorable, though she seems to have cheeks three times the size of normal babies. Really, her head is pear-shaped. But mmm, new baby top-of-head smell.
She's astonishingly quiet. And during our long car ride home from West Virginia, I caught her several times giving me this thoughtful dubious look, like she was trying to figure me out. Maybe she just didn't know what to make of someone who didn't talk baby talk to her. (I tried, really, I'm just bad at it. I wound up pointing out the inaccuracies in her 'Under the Sea' cloth book to her.)
West Virginia, while I'm thinking about that trip, seems to have the same relation to D.C. that Maine has to Massachusetts--in the minds of some D.C-ites, it's a place for visiting weekend cabins and making fun of the locals. Ugh. I've got my own classist and redneck-bashing tendencies, but if the folks of Lost City, WV (great name, btw) ever decide to start puncturing the tires of every SUV with Maryland or DC plates, I'll be completely on their side.
