Dec. 5th, 2003 10:00 amI got an initial mailing from Vericon, Harvard's SF convention. They're bringing in two comics authors as guests this year, Peter "Hulk" David and Mike "Lucifer" Carey! Not bad at all for a cheap local con that's in walking distance!

Last night
ldyfyrefly and I went out to comedy night at the Cantab, for comedy is always much better with a funny companion. Four different improv groups were performing under the umbrella of the Tribe, a fairly industrious production group: besides the Cantab, they also had a holiday show going up at the same time over on Tremont Street.
It was really good overall. There were some slow bits, the hosts who talked in between the troupes...oh, how to put it...need some work, and there seemed to be one member in each troupe who was a bit blinded by the lights and not sure exactly what to do or where to go.
The fourth group, Milt, tried something different by having a hiphop theme--a lot of basketball jerseys and odd hats, a lot of jumping around and yelling "Yo yo yo", that sort of thing. (Yeah, they were all white). The final portion of their show was '187', a "gang duel" where instead of breakdancing they'd take suggestions from the audience and try to turn them into "187 (noun)s walk into a bar" jokes as quickly as possible. It was fascinating--one performer's brain went a bit spastic so that the jokes he tried made NO sense, but since he was aware of it too and was laughing at himself the audience loved it. And in the other gang there was a woman who'd been quiet through most of the other bits and wasn't doing much of the physical "representin'" the other members of her gang were, but each joke she made was just DEVASTATING. She was like the Clint Eastwood of the improvised bar joke.
