I've decorated my little desktop bamboo plant with holiday lights. It looks really pretty with the shades drawn and the lights out, but for some reason students hesitate to come in the room when it's like that.

No, there isn't a downside, is there?


So, question from a Yankee Swap newbie: should the gift be wrapped? Does everyone pick something, unwrap it, and THEN start swapping?

Also, not that I'm craving alcohol or anything, but for the first time I'm noticing how much my bamboo plant's vase looks like a full bottle of Chambourd.

Yes, wrap it.
Person one picks a present, then unwraps it. Person two either picks a present and unwraps it, or steals one from person one, who then picks another present to unwrap. And onward.

Though I never did it before coming north, I have now survived many of these. All I have been to require wrapping before hand. From there, the rules vary. Some say you have to open it when you pick it up, others you don't open them till after all the swapping is done. Long and short, wrap it, take it, and wait to see what the rules are.

i've only heard of the one where you unwrap after all of the swapping is done, but i've only been involved in 1 yankee swap. (dammit we lost the movie "ghost" that way. i dont know why my mom brought that, i loved that movie.)

anyway, to me, it makes more sense to unwrap after everyone's done swapping/stealing.

I've done it both ways too. Sometimes you open the gift to know what's available for stealing, whereas other times you leave them wrapped. In the latter case, it can fun to do a gag gift which looks appealing until it's opened. I gave Listerine one year to fool people into thinking it was alcohol. *whistles innocently*

All right, that would suck. At least when the gifts remain wrapped you might think you've got something good when it's not. Still though, gifts shouldn't be tasteless like that no matter what.
