Dec. 30th, 2003 07:30 pmI'm back! And transcribing journal entries from my notebook. So the next few posts will be a bit out of sequence.
Anyhow. This morning I saw Mt. Katahdin, the tallest mountain in Maine and supposed hideyhole for a powerful spirit who's waiting for the proper time to come out and sweep the Anglos into the sea.
It's not quite as photogenic as Mount Washington, being a ridge instead of a peak, but still quite awesome looming over flat Millinocket the way it does.
We had breakfast at the Appalachian Trail Cafe, which was a hoot--everyone there knew each other, there was laughing and clowning, it was like a big family meal. (It did get old the 4th and 5th times Dad introduced me as "my son Brian from CAMbridge, MawsawCHUsetts".) The town has a real Northern Exposure vibe, if the tv town had 40% unemployment and Katahdin/Baxter State Park vs. the paper mill as the two big sources of income (and polar opposites).
Speaking of Baxter, page 5 of the local newspaper always has a report from the game warden. This week's news involved a moose airlifted after falling through the ice, a dear poaching, and *an 1100-pound moose found hauling a dead 600-pound moose after their antlers stuck together during a dominance fight*. They'd torn up an area about the size of a football field in their struggle. By the time the wardens got there the moose was too exhausted to stand up, though he did bristle--they were able to pry the antlers apart and skedaddle before the moose could stand up and chase them.
In other news, my father drives seven miles under the speed limit on the interstate.
Some town stats
East Millinocket has:
* A paper mill (working);
* A bar, called '"The" Bar', across from the paper mill;
* Schenk (pronounced 'skank') High School;
* a veteran's memorial with an actual WWII tank.
Millinocket Center has:
* A paper mill (closed);
* La Casa, an 'exotic dance club' (closed);
* The Adobe Motel, located four feet from La Casa (also closed).

Date: 2003-12-30 07:45 pm (UTC)I've climbed Mt Katahdin when I was much younger and been to the top of Mt Washington. I have to say that Mt. Katahdin is much more interesting at the top. I've been up to just below the really scary part of the climb one time since but even that was a long time ago. I'd like to climb it again though...I know the spur is scary but I'd like to think I can conquer my fear of heights to take it all in again.
Maine, the way life ought to be...far away from me.
