The entire college's computer system was down all day today. We're still not sure why--their info line would get updates every hour, but never with any news besides "we're still working on it, and don't know when it'll be fixed".

It's startling to see how little work can get accomplished without a computer. I was reading my 'Get Fuzzy' calendar out of boredom.

This is why I'm just getting caught up on the day's LJ posts now. Oh precious, precious internet, I've missed you so much!

In other news, ay-yi-yi, people, I was curious about the food I've been eating so I did a little search online to see how widespread this whole 'feeding cows other cows' practice was. At first I was relieved when googling "cows eating cows" got me USDA information and not porn sites. Then I started reading, and omg, I wished I'd gotten the porn.

*grossness alert*

Feeding them ground-up cow parts is just the tip of the iceberg. According to the U.S. News & World Report, they're also getting tons and tons of chicken manure. And EUTHANIZED DOGS AND CATS.

I'm off beef. I'm SO off beef.

Eeeeeeeeeeew!

Maybe I'll just get kosher beef from now on. Time to start schlepping to Brookline.

Damn....that's sick.

I don't like too much meat anyway, except for steak. My main source of protein is smoothies, egg whites, and peanuts.

So that's why Americans behave the way they do.

It IS nasty. Chickens, pigs--nothing is safe from the things farmers do to them. That's why, either a) organic... or b) if you have access, military meat. Those won't be contaminated at all like that. In military commissaries, they test the meat every thirty minutes or so. Even the fast food beef is better.

*nog* My roomie and I will only eat organic free range beef and chicken. I have to be reallyreallyreally in the mood for fast food to eat it. Fast Food Nation ruined me, but probably in a good way.

Check out Fast Food Nation... but not if you ever want to eat at McDonalds again.

Support Local farms. I understand not everyone can afford to do that but too much of any meat is bad for you. Finding out what they feed cows doesn't surprize me one bit, I knew about the hormones and cow/pig parts. Where I work sort of forces you to be concious of things like that.

The bovine stomach is extremely efficient at breaking down whatever is put into it into building blocks which are complete indistinguishable as to its origin. You could feed the cow absolute but nutritionally balanced garbage against choice kosher feed, and by the time the cow started using it to make meat, you could never tell what it was.

I.e., this is the animal science student saying don't worry about it in cows (or sheep). You should be more concerned with such practices in non-ruminants, like hogs, chickens, and turkeys.
