Jun. 10th, 2004 02:13 pmMore fun facts from 'The Great Pretenders':
There's apparently a legend that King George III secretly married a Quaker girl, Hannah Lightfoot. If true, this would make his later marriage to Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz invalid, which in turn would mean that everyone who's taken the throne since 1785 has been an usurper.
But wait, there's more! The legend says that Hannah and George had children! At least one of whom, George Rex (heh), moved to South Africa and married two native women!
Unfortunately, it's a legend that isn't backed up by the evidence. But there's something really, really scrumptious about typing the sentence "The rightful ruler of England is a black South African."
Ooo. It tingles.
