Continuing the 'weekend of carnivores' theme: during the Sunday morning dogwalk I saw a bluejay swoop down on a mouse and attack it! I immediately ran over doing the 'Hey! Hey!' bugle that's the international call of folks trying to get between hunter and prey. (Its normally heard at all-you-can-eat buffets when there's only one slice of pie left.) Anyhow, in the flurry that followed I have no idea whether the jay managed to fly off with it or it managed to get away. Poor thing.

A bluejay! I guess I've just been ignorant: I associate them with eating their own weight in sunflower seeds and hogging the feeder, not with being predators.

Maybe that attack was more personal than gastronomic. Maybe the mouse had just called him a dirty word, or made a comment about how Toronto's baseball team sucks (get it? 'cause they're the blue jays!).

Yeah, that was my first guess, too -- that mouse was probably talkin smack about that bluejay.

I've actually been noticing a lot of smaller birds attacking larger birds in the sky while driving back and forth...swallows taking on crows and the like.

And I think the swallows are winning!

*giggles*

Although, even more amusing by the fact that I originally read this sentence:

I saw a bluejay swoop down on a mouse and attack it!

as:

I saw a bluejay swoop down on a MOOSE and attack it!

*giggles* Now THAT would definitely be something! I still find it funny either way.

Bluejays are bastards. They'll attack humans if the mood strikes them.

Nobody like the territorial bird, huh?

Bluejays can be vicious, and they make TONS of noise when nesting. However, that mouse may not have been as innnocent as it first seemed...
