The Good

RotK last night at the Fenway, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] ldyfyrefly and [livejournal.com profile] blamehazmat's kind invitation and canny ticket-scoring ways. And oh such a carnival of geekdom it was. Going in garb is one thing (so many people did that I started to recognize the scent of wet wool cloak and know someone in garb was behind me before I turned around); having running boffer fights in front of the screen, though? That's a whole 'nother level.

Oh, sidenote: if you find yourself in that situation, duct-tape sword in your hand, and a nine-year-old in a homemade Gimli costume comes up nervously and taps you with his/her axe? FALL DOWN.

Anyhow. It was my favorite movie of the three. All the characters had a chance to shine, there was an Orc commander with, gasp, a decent grasp of tactics (!!!), and oh oh oh, the Oliphaunts sequence is forever burned into my brain. WOW.

Another good thing is that the faculty seem to've taken me seriously when I told them that their receiving the exam scores and being able to leave for vacation would be contingent on how the office staff was treated during gift-giving season. :)

The bad

The local charities tell us they can't take a car, even a donation, in the condition Ganesha's in. So it looks like the junkyard for her.

*whimper*

Of the five possible holiday parties between now and New Years', lessee: one's on the bus line or a half hour's walk away; one would involve the commuter rail and a lift; one would involve staying overnight; one's in another state and the fifth I have just no clue about--the closest attendee to me isn't responding to e-mail, and doesn't have a car himself. And that's not even mentioning the four-hour Greyhound trip up to Bangor to see my family that's looming in the near-future.

*double whimper*

The ugly

Does anyone know what the story is with a band called "Polyphonic Spree"? I saw a video of theirs this morning, and honestly can't tell if they're legit, or another Fatboy Slim-style parody. A twenty-piece band in white robes, hopping back-up singers, and the worst sideburns I've seen since Easy Rider?

Also, my boss apparently got a visit last night when the building was nearly deserted, from a muscular bald 6'5" man who wanted to let her know that he was the best jazz musician in the world and that we should immediately hire him. He had, he mentioned, shut down music schools in the past when they did things which displeased him. She managed to end the conversation by letting him know we needed a resume and some sample CDs before we can conduct any hiring, but it really rattled her, and now we're on the lookout in case he comes back. Oy.
