It's odd to discover that four other people with my name have Amazon wishlists.

I'm tempted to buy them things. Or steal some of their ideas. (Talking plush Gollum doll? Yay!!)

In the supermarket line this weekend, I cracked and picked up the current issues of 'Gourmet' and 'Oprah', because each one promised excellent chocolate recipes.

WHAT I LEARNED:

'Oprah' had an article on what to do when there are too many people making demands on your time, and a second article on what to do when you're lonely. That seems to cover all the bases.

Someone in the chestnut industry must be on the 'Gourmet' board of directors.

I have no natural defences against food porn.

There were some really interesting chocolate ideas, though, ranging from the odd (layers of chocolate wafers + layers of whipped cream = a cake!) to the oh-my-god-why-didn't-I-think-of-that (make ganache into a thin layer, freeze it, and then cut out a disk; place the disk in the middle of muffin or brownie batter, and when you bake the whole thing you get a ready-made liquid center). Hmmm.

1) Ditto (which I originally typed 'Durro', because my fingers weren't where I thought they were on the keyboard)
2) There's only one me living in Somervil--oh, wait, now there's no one named me living there! I should change that.
3) It's a strange feeling, isn't it? Like when I needed to borrow the balloon twister's underwear. (Long story.)
4) Ashcroft would say no.
5) Quite soon! Yay!

Mmmm, we affectionately called this "chocolate log" when we were kids. I always loved that it's made with Nabisco "famous chocolate wafers" Why are they famous? Were they famous before the advent of the cake?

I ramble.

A log? Really? Was it a vertical log, like a white monolith?

I've been so conditioned--I can't look at a chocolate wafer without thinking "that needs some oreo filling".

It is a horizontal log. If I recall correctly you basically create these little stacks of about 6 wafers with whipped cream in between, then lay the little stacks on their edges in a double row to make the log. Sort of like this fantastic illustration (with each line representing a stack).

Then it must meld in the refrigerator for several hours. Taste wise it is very much like Oreo ice cream.

I've discovered I've become inured to food porn, as I get a bazillion catalogues ranging from Swiss Colony to Harry & David and Pfaelzer (or whatever the hell it is.) Bitter experience has taught me that everything is smaller, drier and more tasteless than it appears.

But recipes - hmmmm. I can just see Mr. Man wondering what the hell that brown sheet in the freezer is.
