Caveat 1: It's always sad when someone dies violently.

Caveat 2: Given the number of Emersonians on this list, it's possible that someone knew this woman, and I'm very sorry for your loss.

That having been said, when confronted with a mugger holding a gun at you, confronting him by yelling "What are you going to do, shoot us?" is really, really not the way to go. Not unless you're trying to get your last words published on the front page of the NY Post.

Who was it? Why did no one point me to the tele?

Her name's Nicole DuFresne. It just happened yesterday...she literally *is* the Post headline story (the actual headline is 'BEAUTY SLAIN', but her quote is right underneath). www.nypost.com

That is one of the most stupid things you could say to someone with a gun. I subscribe to the theory of giving up my wallet without pause...I rarely carry anything of value in there (such as pictures/info) They can have my organ donor card and my limited bank account for all I care

I just read the full article, and this has to be the part that baffled me the most:
"DuFresne — a rape victim who listed "stage combat" as a skill on her résumé — "
Aroo? They mention this stage combat skill in sort of a, "So you'd think she could have defended herself," way. It's not like she had "Karate - Brown belt" listed on her resume, people!

Precisely. But the average schmuck has never even heard of our craft, let alone paused to consider that there might be a difference between Stage and Real Thing. And the "Post" is hardly known for elevated or thorough journalism (or indeed for "journalism" at all).

And TBH, even a Brown belt (or above) is at a serious disadvantage against a firearm. The reason they're so popular is that they make any asshole lethal, no skill required. Unless you're thoroughly trained in self-defense, can get within grappling range, are lightning-quick and unfailingly strong, and don't mind that even if you do everything right there's still an excellent chance you'll be wounded or killed, don't challenge an assailant who's carrying a gun!

Well, yes. I didn't mean to imply that if she had had a brown belt in karate, that she wouldn't have been killed. Just that the newspaper people seemed to interpret both skills as being roughly equivalent. And if there's one thing that you and Cliff have taught me over the last few years -- it's how to not to hit people. And that ears can be removed from the human skull with 38 pounds of pressure.

i don't know this woman who died, but i think it's awful and it really bothers me. as it should. also, it sounds to me like too many people are taking the 'blame victim' stance, however slight, assuming that - if the woman hadn't spoken such a tragedy wouldn't have happened. you never know - perhaps the attacker would have killed MORE of the group. provoking is an ill-advised strategy, but killing someone for a power rush is far, far worse. anyway you look at it, it's horrible and with that in mind, what the victim said is a moot point.
