Caveat 2: Given the number of Emersonians on this list, it's possible that someone knew this woman, and I'm very sorry for your loss.
That having been said, when confronted with a mugger holding a gun at you, confronting him by yelling "What are you going to do, shoot us?" is really, really not the way to go. Not unless you're trying to get your last words published on the front page of the NY Post.

Aroo? They mention this stage combat skill in sort of a, "So you'd think she could have defended herself," way. It's not like she had "Karate - Brown belt" listed on her resume, people!

The reason they're so popular is that they make any asshole lethal, no skill required. Unless you're thoroughly trained in self-defense, can get within grappling range, are lightning-quick and unfailingly strong, and don't mind that even if you do everything right there's still an excellent chance you'll be wounded or killed, don't challenge an assailant who's carrying a gun!
