There are a lot of con-goers here. Let me toss out the situation and get your opinions.

Say you pre-paid for a convention months and months in advance. About six weeks before the con is due to start, another obligation arises for that weekend, so you write the con to tell them you can't make it.

No response.

A week or so after this you get a mailing addressed to everyone who'll be attending the con. You write again, this time cc'ing a few more people in the con hierarchy, to let them know that you really, honestly, aren't coming, and while you know they're busy, a response would be nice.

No response.

Even more time passes. Do you:

*Just give up, and forget about the money;

*Poke the hierarchy again after the con is over, hoping for a refund or credit for the next con;

*Yell loudly now;

*Something else?

How much money?

ditto. If it's a relatively small sum, it may not be worth the effort involved in getting it back.

It's not enough to go nuclear over (besides, I like the con and the folks involved), but it's enough to be inconvenient.

I went through this same thing with Otakon (they suck at responding). They ended up posting a general notice about refunds once the con was over - so maybe poking your con folk after the fact will work (just keep copies of your original emails).

Shout. Not yell -- that's hostile -- but shout to the relevant people that you want some kind of response. If you get none, then resign yourself to having lost the money and use that information to decide whether you go next time. If they don't deal with you in some form before, they won't have the paper trail to deal with it after.

*nod* I met him through BostonGamers, which is a big centralized meeting point for such things.

It's not a bad thing. Everyone should have a Brian ::nodnod::
It just continually disorients me.

I'm glad to hear that. I honestly wasn't sure about Intercon's policy on reimbursing people.

the policy is that if it is a month before the con, we can reimburse you. in this case, we canreimburse him because he has been askign for a while and we fucked up

Call them and very politely, calmly put them in your shoes by telling them the whole story. Try to get that person to sympathise with you until they feel like it's their fault that you couldn't go and give your money back.

I read that advice in a magazine a while ago so don't hold me accountable. But do give them a call, numbers can be found easily.

Stop payment if you can on whatever you sent them. Also, make sure you have a written copy of their cancellation policy (so you know what you're obligated to pay).

Write again, color the envelope bright colours with markers, etc., demand the refund you're due.

I'd continue to bug them - though some of the cons out there are shady... Good luck!

My fault. Me, me, me, me. I goofed bigtime. [livejournal.com profile] tpau threatened bodily harm if I did not resolve this ASAP. I figured out last night that I had filed away a chunk of email that I thought I had worked through and, in fact, I had not. (I also have one other person to apologize to.) You will get your money back. Please accept my sincere apologies. Good luck in Pensacola.
