Of course, I'd have to be all contrary and say that it's clearly a girl from the holler who's lived up north long enough to lose her ability to pronounce an "r" and who has recently returned to the holler.

As a point of interest, I thought I'd poke at Victorian slang, just on the off-chance it had something interesting regarding this fascinating bit of slang in it.
I found this page and the entertaining term, "Haymarket Hector." And "Mandrake"! I like "Mandrake"! Even if it probably only applies to gay men.
