I had a nice long phone conversation with my high school friend from Maine, and she updated me on what's going on with my godson and goddaughter. Who, naturally, are super-geniuses. :)

Otrell's six, writing stories about his activities as a superhero named MYSTERY BOY, taking tap and ballet lessons, and lately he's been refusing to do things because "I have free will, and you don't control my body!" Which gets my friend Kelley sucked into these metaphysical discussions about societal responsibility vs. the rights of the individual "until I realize that he's six and I'm his Mother and I just yell 'Answer the damn phone!!!'".

Aden's three and a half, just starting violin lessons, and is the youngest member of the Tiny Tots gymnastics program, despite a rocky start: on the first day there, she was teased by a group of older (5-6 years old) boys, and one of them called her a baby. She balled up her fist and hit him in the face, yelling "I'm not a baby!"

I'm so proud.

Mmm-hmm, MYSTERY BOY. Secret child of Hal Jordan-Green Lantern. When Kelley read ahead in the graphic novel collection and noticed that Hal's *dead* she was really nervous about checking with Otrell to see if he knew about it. He sat her down and very patiently explained that she shouldn't be worried, see, cuz comic books are fictional.

I get the feeling that most of Kelley's days are spent trying to keep the amused look off her face.
