Erg, groggy.

For the twelve years we've been in Boston, I've heard about the May Day ritual: each year at sunrise a bunch of groovy people gather at the river for Morris dancing and a maypole and much fun. For twelve years we've either gotten there too late, or missed it completely. This year, I vowed, things would be different.

The alarm went off at 5:30. I moaned and reset it for 6.

Showers were taken, fish were fed, morning radio was sung along to, dog was fed, dog was walked, dog got his insulin, backpacks were donned and we were out the door by 7, which is about as good as we get. We followed the bike path along the river to where we were sure it was being held.

No dancers.

We hiked into Harvard Square proper to get breakfast. There was some grumbling. D's first idea for a restaurant was closed. My first idea had gone out of business. OH, there was grumbling.

We finally settled in at the one place in the Square that was open...and two minutes after we sat down, who came around the corner but someone with a fluffy unicorn on a pole, a fiddler and accordion player, and about 100 dancers? They set up their Maypole and started dancing about thirty feet away from our table, and suddenly we were in the middle of this swirl of people in cloaks and flowers and jingly bells.

And the day became much less bad.

I was just thinking about that gathering this morning as I sat and watched the sun come up over the mountain all by my lonesome.

The times we attended folks began gathering literaly before daybreak. I think we were home and showered by 7:30am. Stuningly, those days I was never tired from the lack of sleep...
