My hometown's having it's "World's Fair" this weekend.

The events include a pig scramble, a skillet throw contest, an Oreo cookie stack contest, a potato salad stir-off, and "the tractor back seat driver contest, where one blindfolded child drives while another sitting behind him calls out directions."

I see no way that this will not end well.

P.S. Oh! Bonus! The fairground is on the steepest hill in town!

Let me guess, this is the First Annual Blindfolded Tractor Drive?

It is!

You in particular will be interested to know that they also feature a "hoola hoop contest".

I'm really amused at how many people seem to confuse my hula dance with hoola hoop. I guess I know what my act next year will have to be!

Never mind the awesome of a tractor back seat driver race, have you seen the Watchmen trailer yet?!

Thoughts?

I'm SO CONFLICTED.

Oh. Oh so dubious. Setting aside the whole 'ZOMG they can never fit all that into a 2 or 3 hour film it needs to be an HBO miniseries to even come close' angst, that trailer is a collection of people looking badass and kewl. (Or, in the case of Ozymandius, trying to and failing badly.) What made Watchmen so revolutionary was, among other things, the way each of the 'heroes' had their own collection of mental or physical or social flaws, BIG ones, and instead of overcoming them in time-honored Peter Parker style they toted that baggage all the way through the story and were just as inept and/or sociopathic at the end as they were in the beginning. I don't see the slightest hint of that here.

Or, short version: I feel unsettled by a trailer that makes part of my brain go "Yeah! Owlman's gonna KICK ASS!"

ETA: And then, an hour later, makes ANOTHER part of my brain go, "Oh shit, I meant Night Owl. Owlman's in the Injustice League, isn't he?"

I want a hometown as cool as yours. Ours just has that carnival ride with the cars that flip around and make everyone throw up when they're upside down. Wanna trade? :P

Hmm...I wish we could, just to see how each of us would've turned out growing up in the other place.

Ooh! Oreo cookie stacks? Lemme at 'em! Ok, so the contest would be null and void, but come on… it's Oreos!

Hahaha! Reminds me of the Milk Days celebrations in Harvard, Il. It was a down home country parade complete with Shriners in the little zippy cars, tractors in all shapes and sizes, (no back seat drivers) every single fire engine in Hebron county, including the ones from the fire engine museum, and of course, milk. Yup, at one time, more milk went through Harvard Il that any other place in the country. A fact the one of the largest dairy's likes to promote. Dean's Dairy (used to be based in Harvard) even gives out prizes in the parade. No, they don't throw out candy or beads, they give out milk.
