8:30 The opening musical number is, um, special. Remember when Billy Crystal hosted? I do, because he would have done EXACTLY THIS NUMBER. (Except he probably couldn't have lifted Anne Hathaway).

8:42 Former Supporting Actress Oscar Winners come out to praise this year's nominees: Ohmigod, this is tedious. Will we be getting this for each of the nominees? (Frankly, I'd be a lot more entertained if they did it for the technical categories--5 sound engineers on stage talking about why this year's nominees were good would be fascinating).

Comment from the couch: "Did you see Tilda had a drink while she walked offstage? How did she get it? She must've had it in her pocket!"

8:52. "Writers don't only write screenplays---they write MOVIES." Oooookay...

8:53 Tina Fey just has to mention her name to get applause. Well, yes.

8:54 Steve Martin and Tina Fey must have written this themselves. Wow. Couch: "Man, I never want these two to go away."

9:01 First win for Slumdog! I celebrate; Couch critiques my inept shaving this morning.

9:03 Jack Black and Jennifer Aniston are bringing sexy cue card reading back.

9:05 'Space Chimps' has just officially had more screen time tonight than it actually did in theaters.

9:28 Nearly an hour and still no Bollywood numbers? Displeased Cat is Displeased.

9:33 I just KNOW my parents think Ben Stiller's doing a Bob Dylan impersonation.

9:34 Second win for Slumdog! Gawrsh, maybe at some point one of the Indian folks who worked on this movie will get a moment on stage. Maybe? Hopefully?

9:47 Couch is getting increasingly fascinated by the Awards Guides, those women in white who shoo folks offstage. How do you apply for this job? Is there special training?

9:52 Hugh Jackman's first re-appearance since the opening. And it's for...a montage of show tunes? With a...a drumline???

10:09 Heath Ledger's family is on stage getting the Best Supporting Actor award. If there was ever an acceptance speech that could go on as long as they fucking wanted without having to worry about the orchestra playing them off...

This post and a brief look at best and worst dressed and I'm all set for another year. Thanks!

I've only seen Dark Knight. Any other of the movies nominated worth seeing?

I'm totally wandering in here uninvited (hello!), but I had to pipe up and say that I saw every single film that was nominated for each of the biggest awards (best actor/actress, supporting, director, best picture, and best animated). It was quite a struggle, but I did it! And yes, there are some truly excellent ones, depending on your tastes. Slumdog Millionaire is just irresistible. Doubt was fantastic. And if you're a Kate Winslet fan, you should absolutely see both The Reader and Revolutionary Road!

Do you like quiet little indie films? The Visitor was quite a revelation for me.

The only one I wouldn't recommend (and I hate myself for saying this, because I do so love Robert Downey Jr.) is Tropic Thunder. But I think I'm in the minority there, as most of my friends thought it was hilarious...so I may be crazy.

[/my two cents :) ]

Thanks!! I really appreciate it. I'll have to rent them when I get back to the States!

I'm very surprised that you haven't seen WALL-E! You and Pixar go together like wallabies and hopping, imho.

I loved Slumdog Millionaire, too. Like, had-downloaded-the-soundtrack-into-my-ipod-an-hour-after-leaving-the-theater loved.

I haven't seen anything : ( The only movie that I remember coming out here at the same time as the States was Harry Potter, so I'm like a year behind. Plus it costs about 20 dollars to see a movie in the theater and well, it's out of my budget.

Slumdog Millionaire isn't even on the radar here, but maybe I can order the DVD when it comes out from Amazon. Oooo, I really want to see it now!

AUGH re: Ben Stiller. Was it just me, or was that REALLY HORRIBLY AWKWARD and so not funny? I wanted Natalie to go all SNL on him, personally.

Re: your 9:34 comment - I was thinking the same thing, and was then giddy when A.R. Rahman won and got to sing! So mcuh awesome!

And Heath. His family's speeches were lovely, and all of the guys who lost to him looked absolutely fine with that, which was nice. (Did you hear that, after taking over Heath's role in the upcoming Imaginarium film, Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell and Jude Law are putting ALL of their earnings into a trust for Matilda?? That is class.)

9:52 - I think they were just copying the kickass Radiohead performance at this year's Grammys. That ROCKED.

My picks, apparently, were WAY OFF. Grr.

They're putting their profits toward his daughter? Wow. I gained so much respect for Johnny alone because of his willingness to voice a kid without speech on the TV version of This American Life (for free, with his own studio, after only being requested), but that's just too sweet.

And my picks bombed.

I'm really startled about Kate Winslet, because a) The Reader is not one of her better movies, and b) even if it was, for her to appear on 'Extras' two years ago and play an actress doing a role in a Nazi film because it was "surefire Oscar bait", and then go on to do a role in a Nazi film and GET an Oscar...wow.

Yes. This. Ugh.

Hope they go back to the normal way next year...

Remember those good old days, when a four-hour show only felt like five hours, instead of 9? It seems so far off now...

but you went to bed before Danny Boyle won and did his Tigger dance and then when Slumdog won best pic ALL of the kids were onstage. Did you also miss the Bollywood number? 'Cause they won best song.

I missed it by fifteen minutes!

Of course, if I'd stayed up for it, gotten all excited when I heard the opening notes and then found out they weren't going to do the entire song, that instead it was the start of a medley? Things would have been grim.

I'm willing to forgive a lot just to hear Hugh Jackman speak and sing and stand there in a tuxedo...where was I? Oh yes, I agree that having all the actors/actresses out there giving tongue baths to the nominees was tedious at best.

I wanted to Frank Langella to win though, because I <3 him.

Sean Penn's acceptance speech is worth looking up online. It was the highlight of the show for me.
