Holy wojohowitz.

Remember last week's post about the fresh fish dealie, and how through struggle and toil I'd managed to work my way up from someone totally horrible at carving up a cod to someone really, really bad?

I got back from rehearsal tonight* to discover the fishermen have upped the ante: instead of one large cod, I now have 2 flounders and a few** whiting (think sardines, just slightly larger) to deal with.

Woo.

I knew flounder were shaped oddly, but I've only seen them in aquariums and on ice at the store, i.e. flat. When you open up a bag, all unsuspecting, and look down at a couple of them they're going to be at a diagonal to you and trust me it's VERY CONFUSING. It's a few minutes of "Is this all one long fin? Wait, there's a tail there...but that makes no sense...OHMIGOD what's an EYE doing THERE?"

When the View-Master people approach me to make slides for their H.P. Lovecraft disks, I know right where I'll start.

And now I've gotta cook 'em. Hi ho, hi ho, to (the liquor store and) recipezaar I go...

*Which went really well, thank you for asking, besides the fact that the play on right before ours will have EVERYONE IN TEARS, and when I'm nervous on stage I flap my hands like a brain-damaged flightless bird.

**To know how many whiting, I would've had to open the bag fully and slide all the fish out onto the counter for an accurate count. Which....no. Just no. Not tonight. Can not deal.

Hee hee. Flounder are pretty freakish, for sure.

As someone who's baffled by fish unless they're square and breaded, I'm very amused by this. Our local farmer's market, which includes a really terrific fishmonger, just started up again, but (a) Mr. Man does the cooking and (b) the fish are already cut up 'n' stuff. This week we had scallops and he was very happy to find they'd already removed the, um, thing that holds the scallop to their shell, which you don't want to eat. Not unlike buying shrimp and finding out they're already deshelled. They were yummm.

Hee!

Where I live, flouder are pretty abundant, and I'm always stepping on them when I try to swim at the beach. Pretty freaky to feel that slippery sucker trying to get from under your foot!

:P

And I'm glad rehearsal went well! Break a leg!

Whiting - Panko-breaded fishsticks* with spicy Thai mayonnaise dipping sauce, perhaps?

I am envious of this Fish-of-the-Week club. I wish there was one near me (though we would probably get fish from the bay infected by Kodak runoff, ick).

*And by "sticks", I mean ill-shaped-yet-still-delicious chunks.
