So I go on vacation for two days, thinking things'll be calm and quiet and no one will notice...and one of our professors DIES. Now I'm sitting here waiting for the Chair to arrive and tear me a new asshole for being out of touch during the last couple days.

Poor David. Such a stupid senseless accident. And his wife and kids SAW it happen. Fuckfuckfuck. I'm trying to avoid thinking about it. Fuck.

Ummm, you couldn't have known a professor was going to die. I really don't see why the Chair would yell at you. Sorry to hear about the professor. :(

God, I'm sorry.

You couldn't have seen that coming, the Chair doesn't really have a reason to ream you out.

Every one is right, you had no way of knowing this was going to happen and the Chair has no reason to yell at you.

I'm around if you need to talk or want to go run around on the playground and forget about it.

Stress and grief can cause people to do stupid things and react in ways that are totally over the top. I'm sure the Chair didn't mean to let it loose on you, it certainly isn't your fault the Chair forgot that you were going to be gone.

Were you very close to the professor?

That's the thing, not many people here knew him very well--he'd just started working here about a year ago, and was only in on Fridays for about four hours a week. He was always courteous--shook *everyone's* hand--and always a little nervous about money, trying to get more hours, or find ways to encourage more students to sign up for lessons with him.

Polite, shy, worried about money, and killed by an SUV while trying to change a flat tire...I think part of the sadness of the whole thing is that we weren't able to know him better than just those four details.

Oh, that's awful. I hope his family is being taken good care of right now. What a horrible thing for them to have to go through. It would have to be an SUV wouldn't it.
