This week's Advertiser-Democrat is a new high point in journalism.

Page 1: BUCKFIELD ACCEPTS APOLOGY

(Buckfield, fyi, is a town of about 1700 people.)

A personnel issue pertaining to a Buckfield Recreation Committee member has been resolved. Heather Turner, who was previously cited for inappropriate behavior at a town-sponsored Mardi Gras fundraiser at the Boofy Quimby Hall in Turner, issued a public apology in front of the Board of Selectmen and community members. Turner's apology was generally well-received by the community members present, and some residents stood firmly in stating that no one person in particular should be singled out as a lone guilty party in the events that transpired.

You might think, as I did, that this is a clever journalist's way to suck you in so you read the rest of the article. You'll read on to discover that Buckfield librarians are underpaid compared to those in other towns (who earn as much as $11.92 an hour). You'll pause when the Board expresses its desire to "gradually improve upon the state of its 17 cemeteries", do some quick math in your head and wonder if 1 cemetery per 100 citizens is truly necessary. You'll skim through the upcoming events (the Emergency Management Grant Volunteer Dinner has been rescheduled for May, presumably because of how long it takes to marinate this year's Grant Volunteer), and....nothing. You've reached the end.

NOWHERE IN THE ARTICLE ABOUT HEATHER TURNER'S PUBLIC SHAMING DOES IT MENTION WHAT SHE WAS APOLOGIZING FOR.

So I'm going to have to do something never done in talking about state or national politics, and express an opinion without having full command of the facts. Now, I'm sure that Buckfield is a bastion of upstanding, decent folks. And I understand that a member of the Recreation Committee has to be held to a higher moral standard than your typical Tom, Bert and Henry. But let's be fair here, Buckfield: you're upset about inappropriate behavior after you held a Mardi Gras party at a place called BOOFY QUIMBY HALL. That's like wearing a suit made of Pupperoni to Doggy Day Care and complaining about getting slobbered on.

Speaking as a member of the media, it's entirely possible that the behavior was so inappropriate that it could not be tactfully described. Or the writer/editor felt that describing it would do more harm than good.

Or they just fucked up -- but there may be reasons behind its glaring omission.
