Find out which Xena guy you are.

Find out which Discworld guy you are.
I don't want to even think about the sort of brain it takes to get these two results....
Feeling better. Bought myself a new notebook, wrote two scenes for Act Two of 'Carnies!' that I feel pretty good about, and watched really good episodes of Angel and Justice League (which turned an old comic book convention--two teams meet and bond--and turned it into a very disturbing Twilight Zone episode. Go, Dwayne McDuffie!)
I'm also reading a book about The Pickle Clowns and 'New American Circus Comedy'. Fascinating. The Pickle Family Circus was different from other circuses in that their clowns were the heart of the show--they did entrees, which are extended pieces with dialogue, and often built the other acts around them. It's so radically different from both the Ringling and the Cirque models (and, in my not-so-humble and a bit biased opinion, sooo much better).
In a way, reading this book right now is a bit dangerous, because it's making me look at the Faire through clown eyes. And/or anarchistic eyes, which can be pretty much the same...one of the things the Pickle clowns do is "show the pale underbelly" of their circus, saying 'Yes, we're performers, and here's the magic we want you to see...but here's what's *really* going on'. And that's making me wonder if a Ren Faire could be created that would be the equivalent of that.
Speaking of which, Eight Days.

Date: 2003-04-17 04:46 pm (UTC)I wish i could figure out what I did with my copy.
Unfortunately, the pickles in the last few years have been producing more cirque like entrees instead of their original one ring circus style shows.
They have drifted away fromtheir roots it seem.
But i believbe that book also talks about how bunches of pickles have gone on to star in cirque,.. and the star of a cirque show is often an ex pickle.
(guess they get to a point where they really want to make some money)
Bill Irwin is a god to me,.. i love him bunches and bunches!

Date: 2003-04-18 06:12 am (UTC)It's frustrating to hear that the Pickles have gotten more Cirque-y...from both a financial and a DIY perspective, there's something so much cooler (and attainable!) about three really good clowns getting together and saying "Hey, let's put on a circus!"

Date: 2003-04-18 04:35 pm (UTC)I have always said, that my long term goal is to sit between bill irwin and penn and teler in peoples minds.(if not literally)
And the 3 clowns let's start a circus asthetic is oneof the reasons i like pow so much.
It is compeltely controlled by the participants, and the atmosphere is like theater used to be up until the Astor Place Riot in 1849 (which led to an overall change in public behavior at theaters, with the then common activities of talking back to the actors and throwing money to them fell out of vogue and became considered borrish and unrefined)
We encourage the audience to throw beer on the participants, to scream and yell and make their opinions known.
It's a bit like punch and judy or a live action celebrity death match.
And I am the Clown. We are all character clowns but mineis the only one in makeup
(I sit somewhere between pierott and grotesque)
Sorry I'm rambling
