Jun. 19th, 2003 09:45 amVERY wild dreams last night. Spirits and gates and other dimensions trying to push into this one.
The one I remember best took place in Germany. The first part was set 500ADish, monks in grey robes doing, um, typical monk-y things in wintertime. Choral chanting was echoing everywhere.
And then the dream jumped forward to modern time--the site of the monastery had been expanded and built upon and turned into a theater/performance art space, but in the back of the building some of the original walls and rooms were still there. I was following this nebbishy guy who needed to get something from one of the rooms in back, and who started to hear the choral music. He followed it, trying to find the source, and opened a door he'd never gone in before. (Funny how that happens.) It opened onto this...nebulous area, with a figure inside. Who seemed very nonhuman at first sight, but looked more and more physically normal the closer he got to the door. But blank. Alien. Like being stared at by a human-shaped fish in a tank. And other figures began showing up behind him.
Nebbish (let's call him) scooted and went to find the owner/producer of the theater and ask him about the history of the place. It turned out that it'd been an 11th century monastery, and that had been built on the remains of an earlier ruin, something pre-Christian. Nebbish asked if he'd ever heard any chanting, and the owner seemed jolted--it was obvious that he Knew Something. Nebbish opened his mouth to sing the tune...and here's where the dream got strange.
It was like a crowd suddenly snapped to complete attention, focussed on the possibility of the song being sung. And there was more, a *looming*, like a big weight about to push through something. I've got pretty good dream senses--I dream in color, I've tasted and smelled things a few times, felt textures and breezes. This wasn't any of those. It was...a pressure, but a nonphysical one. Somehow Nebbish and I both knew that if he started singing, standing where he was, on that particular date, he'd be possessed by something(s) by the second note.
I woke up thinking about Maya Deren.
I dunno. This could be just an odd night. Or, this might be a very interesting Solstice.
