Exactly what makes David Blaine a magician, and not a performance artist (and not even a very good one)?

The same thing that makes Penn and Teller magicians and not stand-up comics; at the start of their careers, they relied more heavily on illusions than they do today.

That's as may be. :) I'm speaking here on being defined by your earlier endeavors. As another example, consider Ice-T and his band "Body Count" from the early 90s. This is a heavy metal album, with no rap flourishes -- it's more like Living Colour sped up than anything rap. Yet, during the controversy over "Cop Killa," it was constantly tagged as "another violent gangsta rap album."

Watch his "street magic" show. He's a real magician. At the time I was highly impressed by the street magic show (I saw it 4+ years ago). Now, however, that he's gone off and done stupid things, I'm less impressed.

He had a very nice delivery for his tricks, I thought. I think my favorite was after he did the levetation trick, a audience member said, "Do it again."

He replyed, "No, it hurt."

Good to see the Hippie Petting Zoo didn't take away any of your edge. :)
