So, tuna jerky. (Or, 'Oaken tries a food so you don't have to')

It's, well, it's something. It smells like tuna. It looks like tuna that's been run over about a hundred times. Unfortunately it tastes like bark. Bark that's had pepper rubbed into it.

I think I knocked a tooth out of alignment trying to chew it just now. Bleah.

ick, that sounds like one of those foods where people accidentally left the fish out in the sun and it got dry and they didn't want to waste it, so they decided on a clever marketing scheme to disguise the fact that it is actually a really bad idea. I wasn't terribly impressed with salmon jerky when I tried that, fish should be juicy and tender and oily. Hard fish is garbage.

I'll add "trout jerky sucks rocks" to the list of crappy fish jerkies we've tried. It's actually rather a lot like sucking rocks, now that I think about it.

What a terrible thing to do to a fish.

Like many jerkies, it sounds like the kind you're supposed to let soften in your mouth before attempting to actually *chew*. :)

Reminds me of WH Auden's comment about stockfisk to the effect that the harder bits tasted like toenail clippings and the softer bits like dead skin off the sole of one's foot.

The word "jerky" just has bad connotations, no matter what meatstuff is used as a prefix. Tuna is especially heinous, though...

All I could think of reading this post was a story I read about the most popular pizza toppings in other countries, and tuna was a favorite in Great Britain. Still better than the "Mayo Jaga" combo the Japanese like (potatoes and bacon mixed into mayonaisse).

Okay, I'm not hungry anymore...

Ye gods.

Mind you, just two doors down from where I work is a Crazy Dough where you can get the 'baked potato pizza' (potato, cheddar cheese, bacon and sour cream on top of the pizza). It fills me with fear.

Actually, that sounds pretty good - kind of like a giant decked-out potato skin.

I'll skip the jerky though. So good of you to suffer in our place.

OK, but why? Why would you wanna put that in your mouth? That doesn't sound like fun at all. And there are so many more fun things to put in your mouth...

So true, so true!

It was a crazy time. I actually bought it three weeks ago when I made the mistake of going into an overpriced yuppie food shop when I was starving (which says something about the quality of their other food, I know.) I kept it in my backpack, never quite hungry enough to actually *try* the stuff, until yesterday when desperation got the better of me.

So... I have to know...
Did you make this tuna jerky? (My roomie made beef jerky a couple weeks ago, and it was great!)
Or *gasp of horror* did you buy this somewhere?

And they peppered it? Why not just *salt* it?

BLESH!

It was in Whole Foods! And I was addled, I admit it, I was dazzled by the pretty colors and not thinking well. (I think I was actually hoping it'd taste like teriyaki tuna, but flatter. Sigh.)

Hrm......
I must experiment... see if I can get it tasting better than bark.

I'm curious... did you make this or buy it?
